Bending consists in deforming a straight extruded aluminum profile, of more or less regular section, to apply curves in several planes. Saint Jean Industries Stuttgart has a machine capable of creating asymmetrical profiles in 3 dimensions. This machine passes the straight profile through a 6-axis free-form rotary head. This process is particularly suitable for complex shaped aluminum structural parts for light vehicles.
The advantages of CNC or 3D bending over stretch bending are:
– Radii that meet can be bent without transitions.
– Complex bending geometries can be modified directly via the CNC control.
– Only one tool set per profile allows for a wide range of radii to be bent.
– Due to the continuous pushing of the material, the thickness of the outer wall hardly decreases.
